Buying your first guitar doesn’t have to be a daunting experience. I’ve linked some recommended beginner guitars (above), accessories and books available on Amazon.co.uk. There are a few things to consider when purchasing your beginner guitar:

  • Generally, the more you pay, the better the quality of the instrument.
  • An expensive guitar is not a suitable first instrument – find out if you’re going to stick with it. If you are, there will be plenty of opportunities to upgrade as your skills progress.
  • Make sure you get the right size. Children around 8 years and up will usually be fine with a 3/4 size guitar. Some adults use them, too – Ed Sheeran uses 3/4 size guitars, however, most adults will go for a full-size guitar (also known as 4/4).
  • I recommend classical guitars with nylon strings as a beginner guitar. The strings are easier on the fingers than the steel strings of acoustic and electric guitars. You can always upgrade later on when your fingertips have toughened up. That being said,  if you’re willing to put up with a bit of discomfort in your fingertips, it is possible to start on an electric or acoustic guitar.
  • The earliest age to get children into the guitar is 7 or 8. Through experience, I have found this to be the perfect age where parents can enjoy the greatest amount of progress for their child. The guitar is a technical instrument – while some younger children may do well, I have found that the majority experience less progress than the older children.
